TRAINING FOR HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS

Helping Combative Patients

ISC (Dwayne Fortes) teaches nonviolent defense techniques (no striking) for all levels of the in-hospital/home-health patient care setting for:

  • Medical Doctors (MD’s)
  • Registered Nurses (RN’s)
  • Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN’s)
  • Paramedics / EMTS
  • Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA’s)
  • Hospital Security Officers

In Massachusetts and abroad the frequency of nonfatal assaults and attacks inside an emergency room (ER) or the residence of a home in which health care providers work and/or are dispatched is a vulnerable setting. Workplace violence is a significant occupational hazard that the men and women who provide care under stressful conditions face daily.  This system of assault avoidance and response is designed to be relevant to every member of your staff. No matter the gender of the staff member, no matter how skilled in self-defense or not, this training is retainable; reduces injuries that place staff on workers compensation; limits claims of unnecessary force; and builds self-confidence knowing basic self-defense / limb isolation techniques.

ISC program not only avoids fancy techniques that are forgotten before they leave the class. Simply, we don't teach them at all. Instead, ISC teaches your personnel, who are some of the finest “problem-solvers” in our society, to problem-solve the situation confronting them through universal concepts of verbal de-escalation strategies that aim to protect the patient, staff, and others through trained conflict resolution techniques, deflection and recognition, and physical avoidance and escapes that are a must know for all Health Care Providers.

What is instructed:

This 3-hour course covers the basic skills required by any healthcare provider when facing possible, or even imminent assault. The course content consists of:

  • Situational Awareness’s related to the work environment.
  • Entrance/egress plan considerations based on the totality of the circumstance.
  • De-escalation skills to diffuse potentially violent encounters.
  • Recognize the difference between a patient and an attacker/aggressor.
  • Human Pre-attack indicators that can be recognized before the assault/attack takes place.
  • Managing the 6 D’s (Drugged, Domestic, Diabetic, Deranged, Drunk and Desperate) and what to look for in each.
  • Legal aspects of self-defense and patient restraints
  • Humane Limb Isolation Techniques
  • Escapes from various grabs/holds.
  • Easy to learn and retain “drills” to reinforce managing distance during an assault/attack that create escapes and or isolates mobility of the attacker.

The curriculum is applicable in every medical setting. Rather than take a “multi-member team approach, this training provides skills that every healthcare provider should know to personally avoid assault–especially when that Healthcare Provider is working alone in a remote location, or patient’s room with no other staff member present. This course provides training where oral and physical deflection skills are simple and easy to remember and apply.
